CASTORLAND — In Lewis County two village elections were held March 19.
In Castorland 18 people went to the polls. Former trustee Heidi Lehmann received 18 votes to be elected mayor. Former mayor Mervin Moser received 17 votes and Scott Moshier received 18 votes to be elected trustees.
In Lowville three were vying for two seats on the Board of Trustees.
Incumbents Charles Terrillion, with a total of 350 votes and Danny Salmon, with 229, retained their seats for another four years. Joseph Austin received a total of 216 votes.
Ms. Lehmann said she decided to step up to the mayoral position as way to continue to serve the community.
“There are so many unique ways for someone to give back to their community. Whether serving on a municipal board, volunteering for the local fire department, leading storytime at the local library or donating blood, the options are endless,” she said. “I grew up in a family that routinely supported their community and as a parent, I wanted to demonstrate that same character quality to my own four children. Over the past four years, serving as a trustee in Castorland, I have been continuously impressed with the knowledge and wisdom of my colleagues. With the reassurance that they would stay involved with the board as well, my decision to run was easy. They are all wonderful representatives that truly have the village’s best interests at heart and it is an honor to serve alongside them for another four year term.”
The newly elected Castorland mayor, is looking to continue some of the projects, which the village with her as a trustee have been working on over the past four years.
“The village of Castorland board has been working hard to find funding that would cover the cost of a new water tower,” Ms. Lehmann said. “As construction prices kept rising, we took precautionary measures to find funding that would keep taxpayer dollars low and still bring a quality product to the village. One of our major goals is to see this six-figure project come to fruition in the next two years for future generations to enjoy.”
She said she would also like to bring new business to the village.
“I would like to champion the idea of local businesses once again lining the streets of our village,” she said. “Castorland used to be a busy intersection for commerce and trade between Lowville, Beaver Falls and Carthage and I can see the day when this may happen again.”
The new mayor is concerned about safety in the village.
“We have had an unprecedented number of young families move into the village in the past few years and our playground is teeming with children now,” she said. “This is very exciting to us as board members and we want to continue that positive involvement with the community. With that said, I would like to see investments made in a new security system so that the shared community spaces can remain safe for all residents to utilize and enjoy.”
